Wiles Hill-Highland Park Neighborhood Association

The presentation Nadine Kelly gave during tonight’s city council meeting was INCREDIBLE!  She was helped by a group of neighborhood children who showed their artwork about the neighborhood the love.  It took the Council chambers by storm!  What great work by Nadine and those helping her.  It was great viewing on Comcast channel 15.  If you missed it live on Channel 15, check back for the numerous replays.  This is just another example of the great neighborhood we are.

Wow!!!

So much wonderful change for our city and our neighborhood!  As you are no doubt aware, there have been several changes to the WHHPNA Board of Directors.  These changes have all been implemented and the transition has been very positive with all working on their new responsibilities.

The Wiles Hill and Highland Park Neighborhood Association would like to welcome the newest Board member, Margaret Strout.  Margaret was elected as Vice President of the Association at Wednesday’s meeting.  Margarat fills the position left vacant by Richard Dumas, who has completed his transition from Vice President to President of the Association.  The change in WHHPNA Presidency took place after Wes Nugent’s election to Morgantown City Council  and transition from the WHHPNA presidency.

We are very proud and supportive of our new Board members, Margaratt and Richard.  Let’s support them by volunteering and taking part in our Association.

Also, congratualations to Wes on his election to City Council.  You have, as you have had in the past, our support and trust.  Way to go, Wes!  You’ve worked hard to preserve and improve Wiles Hill and Highland Park.  Now, you can do the same for Morgantown.

Make time to check out the presentation the Wiles Hill Highland Park Neighborhood Association to City Council tomorrow, Tuesday July 26 at 7pm in Morgantown City Council Chambers in City Hall, downtown.  Please go to support our volunteer neighborhood presenters if you can.

If you are unable to attend, be sure to check out the presentation live on Channel 15 for Morgantown Comcast customers.  If you don’t catch it live on Comcast channel 15, check out the numerous replays.  This is a great opportunity to introduce our Neighborhood and our goals to our new city council

At the January 2011 meeting of the Wiles Hill-Highland Park Neighborhood Association, the quorum of members assembled passed a resolution in support of the “Year of the Neighborhood: My Morgantown” designation recently discussed and agreed to at the Neighborhood Coordinating Council meeting.
The proposed designation would follow in the path of other similar recent initiatives, such as the “Year of the Child” and the “Year of Being Green” and will include a year’s worth of related information and programming as set forth by Morgantown’s neighborhoods.
Residents in Wiles Hill-Highland Park welcome and look forward to the Year of the Neighborhood: My Morgantown.

At the November 2011 Regular Meeting of the Wiles Hill-Highland Park Neighborhood Association, Councilman Don Spencer (Seventh Ward) shared with neighbors a tentative draft of Morgantown’s 2011 legislative priorities, and encouraged citizens to offer input and suggestions in developing the city’s goals to lobby the W.Va. Legislature in support of code changes that would permit our community to better address issues and challenges affecting us in Morgantown with local solutions.

Goals in the 2011 priorities list include:

  1. Establish a parallel effort to strengthen the 1968 State provisions for Home Rule beginning with Class I and Class II municipalities.
  2. Amending the State Code and State Fire Code pertaining to the ability of municipalities to enforce standards which may exceed or differ from existing codes. (Requested by Morgantown City Administration).
  3. Adoption of 2009 Updates to the ICC including Chapter 9 of the International Residential Code (Energy Conservation Code -IeCC). (Requested by Morgantown City Administration).
  4. Allow class I and II cities to be permitted to regulated their own solid waste service contracts and common carrier authorizations. (Introduced in 2010).
  5. Amend the State Tax Code to authorize municipalities with voter approval to implement a local sales tax options pertaining to infrastructure improvement, public land acquisition, public facility construction and renovation, and transit service enhancement. (Requested as a result of WVU Symposium on Long-Term Unfunded and Underfunded Liabilities – 11/11/2010).
  6. Set standards for in-stream level of TDS at 500 ppm (DEP Agency Approved Rule, Submitted 7/30/10 to Legislative Rule Making Review Committee).
  7. Control steam water withdrawals and fracking fluid disclosures. (Introduced in 2010 Legislative Session. Controls recommended by Mon River Water Quality Forums in fall of 2010).
